On December 16, 2009, I wrote my final exam at the University of Lethbridge. My degree, a Bachelor of Management, capped over seven years of post-secondary education.
During those seven years I also earned a two-year college diploma in Marketing, studied computer science for two years and spent some time at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.
But, my real education in marketing started when I was 12. My father, a 47 year veteran of print advertising and publishing started me on my journey with a newspaper sales and delivery job.
I probably learned more about marketing when I was 12 than from any particular marketing class. I also learned that not very many people read newspapers - and that was over 20 years ago.
After my early years of selling newspapers I spent two years in market and marketing research, then three years in sales (and believe me, I am an expert at picking out the hot air sales talk that is thinly disguised as a marketing analysis).
My creative side was developed with six years in film and television production in Vancouver and Los Angeles. It was after my years in TV that I decided a more formal education would help me take the next step to starting my own business as a marketing consultant.
I started David Howse Marketing in May of 2008 and have loved every minute of it. I want to thank the local business owners for giving me my start here in Lethbridge [I now operate in both Calgary and Lethbridge]; I’ve received as much helpful advice as I’ve given. And there you have it, the short version of my marketing story.
